Why Oral Hygiene Is Important During Invisalign Treatment

If you plan to get Invisalign®, you should know that oral hygiene is important. Read on to learn about the importance of oral hygiene during Invisalign teeth straightening treatment. This highly successful therapy straightens your teeth using custom-made transparent aligners in roughly the same length of time as conventional braces. The aligners are discreet, making achieving a straight and healthy smile simpler than ever before.

Invisalign trays can be taken out when eating or brushing the teeth. This makes it easier to clean the teeth more effectively compared to regular braces.

The importance of oral hygiene during Invisalign treatment

Invisalign trays may be removed to eat; however, patients need to brush their teeth and clean the aligner trays before putting them back in. Food and germs will accumulate in the plastic trays if they are not cleaned properly. This will potentially increase the patient's susceptibility to cavities and tooth discoloration.

Maintain good oral hygiene during treatment

Brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash are all necessary. When it comes to Invisalign treatment, however, these behaviors are particularly essential. The saliva in the mouth will eliminate the food debris and germs in the mouth if patients forget to brush their teeth once or twice. If they pop the aligner back in without cleaning it thoroughly, the food particles will be stuck on the teeth for hours.

Brushing and flossing the teeth after each meal can help to maintain a healthy mouth. Drink lots of water during meals as well, since this will aid in the removal of food and other potentially hazardous items. Naturally, there may be instances when brushing or flossing is unrealistic, such as when eating in a restaurant. Before wearing the trays, rinse the mouth completely and eat a piece of sugar-free gum. It helps to keep a backup toothbrush and toothpaste tube in your handbag, briefcase, or glove box to prevent these situations.

Caring for Invisalign aligners

When brushing the teeth, it is imperative to clean the Invisalign trays as well. Use the specific cleaning kit provided by Invisalign for proper cleaning. Fluoride toothpaste or mild soap may also be used to clean the trays. Patients can clean the aligners with a soft-bristled toothbrush, a cloth, or a cotton swab.

Brushes with a hard bristle may damage the plastic, scratching up the aligners. If brushing the aligners is not immediately feasible, the better alternative is to rinse them before wearing them again. The aligners can be soaked in warm water. The aligners may change form with hot or cold water, jeopardizing the treatment progress. In the same way, aligners have no place in a dishwasher or a heated environment, such as a closed vehicle.
