Metal Versus Acrylic Partial Dentures

If you recently had some of your teeth removed due to an oral health issue, you may be wondering what type of denture to get. Fortunately, there are a few different types of partial dentures available. Partial dentures themselves are a great solution and may help restore your smile. Additionally, partial dentures are easy to adjust to and help restore chewing and speaking function. When it comes to deciding what type of denture to get, there are two kinds to choose from. These are metal dentures and acrylic dentures.

Metal partial dentures

Metal partial dentures are one of the most common types of partial denture. It consists of placing replacement teeth on a cast metal frame. The denture is affordable and often attaches to existing teeth with metal clasps. However, for cosmetic reasons, some denture wearers may prefer precision attachments. When cared for, metal partial dentures tend to last longer than other types of dentures and are usually smaller than acrylic dentures.

Because of the smaller size, metal dentures are often easier to adjust to than acrylic dentures. Metal dentures also do not take up as much room on the roof of a wearer’s mouth. Many wearers find the dentures feel more natural too. However, there are a few disadvantages to metal dentures. For example, metal dentures tend to cost more and are more time-consuming to fabricate.

Acrylic partial dentures

Acrylic dentures are made from resin and are in high demand among denture wearers for several reasons. These dentures are easy for a general dentist to adjust and are often more comfortable than other options. Because the dentures are easier to adjust, wearers typically experience less irritation along the gumline. Acrylic dentures are also more affordable than porcelain dentures. Acrylic dentures use clear clasps. Therefore, they are often considered more aesthetically pleasing in appearance.

Like metal dentures, however, acrylic dentures have a few downsides. Acrylic dentures are made from plastic resin. That means they may wear down faster than metal dentures. Additionally, even though acrylic dentures do not cost much up front, they usually have to be replaced every five years. Therefore, the cost can go up in the long run. Acrylic dentures are also more prone to breaking and are bulkier than other options. This may result in longer adjustment periods for denture wearers and a more difficult time relearning how to chew or speak properly.

The decision on what type of denture to get is a personal one and should always be made between a denture wearer and their general dentist. Depending on a wearer’s mouth and the severity of any oral conditions, a dentist may recommend an acrylic denture over a metal denture or vice versa. There are benefits to both. However, each type also comes with a list of drawbacks that should be considered when making a final decision.
