Invisible Braces for Teeth Straightening FAQs

Invisible braces are a great option for those looking to straighten their teeth discreetly. These oral appliances have emerged as the new popular way to straighten teeth without drawing a ton of attention to the mouth. Traditional metal braces were once the norm for orthodontic treatments, but they are highly conspicuous devices that cover up the patient's teeth during their treatment. The poor aesthetics that come with metal braces have led to some people avoiding getting treatment altogether.

Frequently asked questions about invisible braces

Thinking about getting invisible braces? Below are the answers to common questions patients have about these oral appliances.

What are invisible braces?

Invisible braces are rigid, transparent plastic trays that slowly push a person's teeth towards a better alignment over a period of time. Clear aligner trays are removable, which eliminates many of the problems associated with metal braces.

Another invisible braces option is ceramic braces, which consist of ceramic brackets and clear wires. The process works the same way that traditional metal braces work, however, the appliances itself are harder to see.

How do invisible braces straighten teeth?

Patients get a series of trays at the start of their treatment. Each tray is designed to move the patient's teeth to a predetermined position before being swapped with another that moves it closer to the desired position. The aligner trays have to be worn at least 20 hours each day for the treatment to be effective.

After the dentist cements the brackets onto the teeth, they will connect the wires through each bracket. Then, the patient visits the dentist every few weeks for adjustments, in which the wires are tightened.

What are the benefits invisible braces provide?

  • Invisible braces are harder to see
  • There is no metal in the mouth, which avoids potential irritations
  • Clear aligners are comfortable and ceramic braces are made of gentler materials

Are invisible braces guaranteed to straighten teeth?

Each patient has their unique circumstances so it is up to a dentist to determine what works best for each patient. Invisible braces can fix oral issues like crooked teeth, crowded teeth, gaps between teeth, underbites, overbites and underbites.

How are invisible braces made?

The process involves the dentist using digital images to create a model of the patient's teeth. This model is used to create models of what the patient's teeth will look like with treatment. The information is passed to a dental lab that makes oral restorations. The process takes about two weeks.

With ceramic braces, custom-made brackets are created for the patient's teeth. Additionally, wires are specifically cut to fit the patient's mouth.

Can children get invisible braces?

It depends. Anyone who has all of their permanent teeth is old enough for invisible braces. It does not matter if the patient's teeth have fully erupted. Fillers can be added to their aligner trays to make room for the patient's teeth as they continue to grow. In the case of ceramic braces, patients of all ages are typically good candidates.
