How to Care for All-on-4® Dental Implants

All-on-4 dental implants offer a permanent tooth-replacement solution for those who want artificial teeth that look natural and can be used like regular teeth. The All-on-4 method can be used on both the top and bottom jaws for full smile restoration in adults missing all their teeth. Where dental implants usually only allow for one tooth per each implant, All-on-4 is an innovative strategy that uses only four dental implants inserted into the jaw to support a full arch of permanent, custom-created teeth.

This specialized, tailored system uses a patented technique of strategic implant placement. Once the implants and arch of teeth (known as a bridge) are fixed into place, you might be wondering how you can take care of your new teeth to make sure they go the distance.

Thankfully, All-on-4 teeth can be used virtually like you would natural teeth, so you might already know how to take care of them. The appliance is fixed so securely to the implants that it does not move out of place. The bridge does not need to be removed nightly like dentures and is therefore much easier to maintain. Although one of the most low maintenance tooth-replacement methods, there are certain tips for care that can make your All-on-4 teeth last longer.

Caring for your All-on-4 dental implants

Keep in mind that during the first few weeks after the implants and bridge are placed, you will need to exercise caution when using the implanted teeth. The jawbone is still fusing with the implants during this period, and you do not want to disturb the healing process. If there is any pain or discomfort, using an over-the-counter pain reducer like Ibuprofen can help to decrease inflammation and throbbing. Use a cold compress on any areas of discomfort during this healing period.

Brush and floss

All-on-4 implant teeth still need to be brushed regularly to rid the mouth of bacteria. Although your new artificial teeth are not susceptible to decay, they can still be damaged or worn, and bacterial buildup on the teeth can still threaten the gum tissue.

Be sure to diligently clean your All-on-4 teeth after each meal to promote longevity of both the prosthesis and your oral health. Floss your teeth once per day as you would natural teeth. There are special brushes and flossing utensils that are designed for implant care, so be sure to ask your dentist about which will work with your lifestyle.

Keep up with your dentist appointments

Never miss a cleaning or dental checkup when you have All-on-4 implants. Even though they are not natural teeth, you will need to treat them as if they are. Regular visits to the dentist every six months are an important step in caring for your new teeth. In rare occurrences, the bridge can loosen and subtle complications can arise without your knowledge. At each cleaning and checkup, your dentist will be able to spot problem areas and clear tartar buildup to make sure your teeth are looking and feeling their best.

The bottom line

Caring for your All-on-4 teeth is much like your regular oral hygiene routine. Brushing and flossing regularly, as well as never skipping your regular dentist appointments will go a long way to protecting your investment.
