5 Options for a Smile Makeover

With so many new advancements in dentistry, patients are constantly bombarded with advertisements for new treatments and smile makeover options. Given the sheer amount of information out there, it can be difficult for patients to know what options will actually work for their unique situation. There is no one-size-fits-all solution, and a patient's treatment must be considered on a case-by-case basis. A consultation with a dentist will let patients know what options are available and the benefits of each one.

Five smile makeover options

While there are a number of ways to transform a smile, some popular smile makeover treatments include changing the alignment of teeth, changing the shape or color of teeth and replacing missing teeth. The procedure chosen will depend on how much time the patient is willing to spend on treatment and what specific cosmetic changes the patient desires.

Orthodontics

Orthodontic treatment involves moving the teeth in the jawbone to correct spacing or crowding issues as well as skeletal issues that lead to an overbite or underbite. While most people immediately think of braces as the only orthodontic treatment, there are other options available now. Clear aligners have become increasing popular in recent years and are a discreet way for some patients to correct misalignment issues.

Crowns

If a patient does not like the natural shape, size or color of the teeth, crowns can sometimes be used as a cosmetic dental treatment. In this procedure, some tooth structure is removed and custom caps made of porcelain, metal or composite are cemented in place. For a smile makeover, patients typically receive crowns on all of their front teeth.

Veneers

Veneers are similar to crowns in that they can change the size, shape or color of the teeth, but unlike full-coverage crowns, veneers only cover the front surface of the teeth. They require less tooth structure removal but may not have the same longevity as full-coverage crowns. These restorations are typically made of composite or porcelain, and the shade of the veneer can be chosen by the patient.

Replacements for missing teeth

Missing teeth — especially front teeth — can be a source of embarrassment for patients, and replacement options can restore a patient's confidence in their smile. Restorations for missing teeth include implants, bridges and removable partial dentures.

Whitening treatments

For patients who like the size and shape of their teeth but simply want a brighter smile, there are multiple whitening treatments that can boost one's confidence. Some of these procedures are done in-office and some are done at home. The type of bleaching solution chosen and frequency of treatment is based on the patient's specific needs.

Conclusion

For patients considering any of these smile makeover options, careful consideration and research is important. The patient should be in good oral health before investing in cosmetic dentistry treatments and must be dedicated to maintaining a high level of oral hygiene throughout life.
